How to Establish Care
Simply walk in to the Behavioral Health Clinic at 201 Deermount, head up to the second floor, and check-in at the front desk or call 907-228-9203. You will meet with one of our specially-trained staff members to discuss available services and be referred to the appropriate program.
Tribal Addictions Program
Are you worried about your alcohol or substance use? Are you ready to quit and looking for support? KIC Behavioral Health Department offers ASAM level 1.0 Outpatient and ASAM level 2.1 Intensive Outpatient treatment services, which include medication-assisted treatment (MAT) services. Our substance use disorder treatment programs adhere to the standards of and are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
Rooted in our Southeast Alaska Traditional Values, our program is facilitated by trained professionals including Chemical Dependency Counselors, Peer Support Specialists, and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners. Services include daily groups, individual counseling, medication-assisted treatment, peer support services, outreach services, recovery support events, and more. We host daily groups that offer support, skill-building, and incorporate cultural practices such as harvesting and preparing local plants. Current group offerings include relapse prevention, cultural talking circles, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT).
If you need a higher level of care, including inpatient treatment, KIC can provide case management and support to connect you with a treatment center that meets your needs.
Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT)
KIC’s Medication-Assisted Treatment program provides medications for substance use disorder treatment. For the treatment of opioid dependence, KIC prescribes buprenorphine-naloxone (Suboxone) and buprenorphine long-acting injection (Sublocade). For the treatment of alcohol dependence, KIC prescribes extended release injectable naltrexone (Vivitrol), daily Naltrexone as a pill, and other medications including Disulfram and Acamprosate. Medication-assisted treatment, in combination with counseling provided through the Tribal Addictions Program, can help people achieve their goal of living life free from substance use dependence.
Mental Health Counseling
KIC Behavioral Health provides regular mental health therapy/counseling for adults, youth, and children who are eligible for services. Our Mental Health Clinicians work with you to identify concerns, establish a treatment plan, and achieve goals that improve your well-being. Appointments are in person at our facility, over the phone, or in the community at the request of the client. Clinicians are trained in/utilize a variety of modalities to best meet the needs of our clients. To receive a referral to mental health counseling services, walk-in or call our office any time we are open to establish care.
Behavioral Health Aide Services
Behavioral Health Aides (BHAs) are mental health professionals who work under direct supervision to provide behavioral health care to individuals and families. BHAs are community members who understand cultural and historical perspectives that influence how and when Tribal citizens seek care. BHAs are trained to provide culturally-responsive services. BHAs scope includes performing intakes, making referrals, developing life skills, providing psychoeducation, facilitating individual and group interventions, performing case management, and engaging in community health promotion activities. BHAs walk alongside client as they explore ways to build coping skills, practice independent living skills, and grow their support systems. BHA services are available while on the mental health waitlist, or while receiving other KIC Behavioral Health Clinic services.
Psychological Testing
Psychological testing and assessment provide valuable insights into an individual’s cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and academic functioning. These services are designed to clarify diagnoses, inform treatment planning, and/or guide educational accommodations. Clients will then receive a detailed written report that includes diagnostic impressions, recommendations, and practical next steps. A feedback session is also provided to discuss the results and answer any questions. Available testing can vary.
Referrals to Other Services
The Behavioral Health Department staff can facilitate and support referrals to other programs including: residential youth, inpatient-mental health/substance use programs, adult mental health services, psychological testing, and others. Walk in or call anytime to talk about your or your family’s needs.
Crisis Intervention and Crisis Stabilization
KIC Behavioral Health provides single or ongoing crisis intervention and stabilization services. Clients experiencing suicidal thoughts, life changes, increased mental distress, dysregulated emotions, situational stress, and more can walk in to or call Behavioral Health anytime we are open to speak with a trained behavioral health staff member. All providers are trained in assessing risk, meeting client needs, and creating appropriate referrals.
Assessments
We provide substance use, mental health, and integrated assessments. Substance use assessments are available on a first-come, first-served basis after an intake is completed. Call 907-228-9203 for current walk-in SUD assessment times. Mental health and integrated assessments are scheduled with a Mental Health Clinician after a referral for the service is completed.
