Language Program

Revitalization & Fluency

The KIC language program seeks to preserve and revitalize the heritage languages of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian people, in service to the ultimate goal of revitalization: language fluency. This program includes translation and documentation, instructional workshops, classroom courses, apprenticeship and mentor work, and resource and curriculum development, and community language facilitation.

Apprenticeships

Individuals interested in a language apprenticeship should contact the Heritage Language Facilitator in that language for more information.

Learning Our Languages Online

We invite you to start learning one of our Heritage languages online today by visiting our Heritage Languages Site. You can listen to hundreds of words and phrases in XAAD KíL (Haida), LINGIT (Tlingit), or SHM’A̲L̲GYACK (Tsimshian), practice speaking the language, then incorporate what you learn into your conversations with your family and friends in your daily life. By speaking our languages with your children and grandchildren, you’ll help preserve our culture and languages as more and more people hear our languages spoken.
